Mining and Safe Driving with Vehicles

Mining and Safe Driving with Vehicles

Many accidents occur in the transport of people, raw materials, chemicals and dangerous goods on the mines. The Arrive Alive website has provided information to several mining companies in South Africa for their own safety campaigns and is well aware of the road safety risks to be addressed by these mines.

Vehicle on mines are not only the usual passenger vehicles, bakkies and trucks but also very specialized vehicles which require specialized training. Road crashes, and this includes the accidents at mining sites are usually the result of

  • Human error
  • Vehicle factors
  • Environmental factors

In this section we would like to discuss these contributing factors and threats to safe transportation on our mines as well as safety initiatives to enhance the safety of all!

This would include a closer analysis of amongst others:
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Driver Fitness [Health, Impaired driving, Fatigue, Vision etc]
  • Driver Training
  • Safe Driving techniques
  • Fleet Management in the Mining Industry
  • Overloading of vehicles
It is our vision that the information shared on the Mining Safety website could be used by more of our mines in their training manuals and campaigns and that this could contribute towards a reduction in mining fatalities and injuries.
