Most Regularly Used Mining Equipment and their Uses

Working in a mining company can be a dangerous experience because of the safety hazards involved. In order to prevent accidents from happening, it is essential for all staff to undergo proper training to understand the required safety and operating procedures that go along with each piece of equipment.  From drilling and crushing to grinding, here’s the most popular equipment and their individual uses:

•    Mining drills

Drilling is a strategic task. You need to be awake and aware of everything around you when you’re busy drilling. As part of the underground mining operations, drilling is used when rocks or minerals are located beneath the surface. After the material has been drilled out, then trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles or machinery can remove the mess. Depending on the depth of your underground activity, sometimes drillers are used to create holes big enough for miners to enter and work in. It is particularly important in these instances that you know how to prevent accidents from happening to you or those around you.

•    Blasting tools

Blasters are used to break down hard materials by making explosive actions. This type of method is also used to remove pockets of unwanted material that could be preventing miners from getting a specific piece of rock or material that they need. This job is particularly dangerous because of the equipment you use and the effects of it on your health, therefore you need to have proper training and experience in handling these tools. If not done correctly, poor practices and blasting fumes can result in damage to rock structure (which will lead to future complications) and health risks for you and those around you.

•    Earth movers

Earth movers are used for above the surface transporting, to carry loose materials away from the mining location. In order to speed up projects and make operations run smoother, movers are used alongside bulldozers and other heavy equipment which can do a similar job. This is easily one of the most important pieces of equipment for any mining job, and these units require specialist individuals to operate them.

•    Crushing equipment

If blasting is not necessary, then crushing is usually the alternative. Designed to achieve a similar outcome, crushing equipment crushes rock and stones, allowing mining vehicles to easily pick up and move around. These machines are used for a variety of different mining activities and are highly effective in that they reduce the costs associated with the handling of larger sized material and also ensure efficient liberation of elements of interest in downstream processing of the material. Be it underground or on top of the Earth’s surface, crushing equipment is essential because it reduces and gets rid of excess material and resource on-site which could be letting off fumes and affecting working environments.

•    Feeding, conveying and analysis equipment

When the material available is ready for crushing, for example, rocks, the feeding device will feed the rocks to the crusher, which will determine the size of the outcome. There is also a conveying unit which helps to control the amount that gets fed into the crusher, to ensure that the machine doesn’t overwork or get damaged by the large sizes of materials that it crushes.

In essence, the feeder combined with the conveying unit will help to improve the efficiency of the crusher and make sure that everything is done according to a process. There is a whole process that needs to be adhered to before the fraction sizing can be completed. As mentioned, the feeding and conveying equipment work hand-in-hand to help control material flow within the crusher. Without these two units, things will not run smoothly and equipment will not last.

Another important piece of equipment is a scale system, also known as a ‘belt’ which monitors production output and regulates the load of materials. While materials are on the belt conveyor, there are systems available which will help you to take a sample directly from the moving material stream. Paired with flow measurement systems, you will be able to maintain product quality throughout this process.

In conclusion

In such a large industry with so many variations of work, there are tons of tools which can help you do the job more effectively. Although expensive, and many companies actually seek mining equipment finance to assist with these expenses, in the long-term, having the necessary equipment can really help save on resources, money and time. The above-mentioned items are the most commonly used pieces, and especially for new employees, it is important that you get the right training on these machines to understand more about their functions, what they’re used for and how they can make the job easier.
