A man died while he was mining illegally in Springs, east of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Saturday.
Police received a call on Friday at 11:00 that a rock had fallen on a man while he was digging on land belonging to Aurora Gold mine, Captain Johannes Ramphora said.
He said rescue workers were still trying to retrieve his body, which was believed to be trapped about 100m underground.
