A man was killed in a mine accident at AngloGold Ashanti’s Kopanang mine near Klerksdorp on Wednesday, the company said.
Spokesperson Alan Fine said the man, a scraper winch operator who had worked for the company for 26 years, was fatally injured in a fall of ground at around 1pm.
Fine said the Department of Mineral Resources would visit the mine on Thursday to begin an investigation.
The mine had suspended drilling and blasting activities.
Attempts were being made to notify the man’s relatives, who live in Mozambique. – Sapa
