In the rapidly evolving mining industry, real-time information is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. The mining industry, with its complex operations and inherent risks, stands to make incredible safety and productivity gains from effectively integrating real-time information management systems (RTIMS). These systems are a game changer, offering enhanced data management, improved safety, and optimised operational efficiency.
In South Africa, real-time sensor monitoring has been recognised by the Department of Minerals and Energy as an essential tool for compliance with mandatory guidelines on monitoring, managing, and reporting exposures to health hazards.
The power of real-time information in mining
Real-Time Information Management Systems (RTIMS) in mining facilitate seamless data exchange between underground and surface environments. This enhances situational awareness and aids in smarter decision-making, empowering organisations to improve oversight and strategic planning. With access to high-quality data, decision-makers can allocate resources more effectively and refine their strategies to bolster productivity while maintaining safety standards.
Safety is a critical area where RTIMS makes a significant impact. Real-time monitoring systems play a crucial role in swiftly detecting environmental hazards, toxic gas emissions, or potential fire incidents. This enables swift emergency responses as well as enabling mines to take proactive measures, safeguarding the health of workers and preventing costly damage to ecosystems.
RTIMS can also contribute to operational efficiency by enabling predictive maintenance and process optimisation. This ensures that machinery and equipment are operating at peak performance, reducing downtime and enhancing productivity.
One of the key benefits of RTIMS is improved data management as part of an integrated digital mine solution. By collecting and transmitting data in real-time, these systems eliminate the delays and inaccuracies associated with traditional data collection methods, leading to more efficient and safer operations.
Innovative solutions
As a mining solutions provider dedicated to providing top-tier safety and monitoring solutions across Southern Africa and beyond, Probe IMT has partnered with M3SH Technology to bring these advanced solutions to our region, providing comprehensive real-time environmental monitoring and control.
A Canadian OEM with South African roots, M3SH Technology is an established global leader in innovative real-time safety solutions. A suite of advanced monitoring devices is designed to operate in the harshest industrial environments, detecting toxic gases, chemicals, ambient conditions, smoke, noise and early fire incidents.
One of the standout solutions from M3SH is its Private 5G communication infrastructure. This private, non-cellular network offers high-speed connectivity and low latency, ensuring that data on equipment health and environmental conditions is transferred seamlessly and swiftly from last mile underground to the surface, crucial for real-time monitoring.
We recently installed a secure Private 5G network and a range of M3SH Technology real-time intelligent sensors at the Impala Bafokeng mine in Rustenburg as part of projects with the Mandela Mining Precinct to advance digital mines. Key devices include the P50 Environmental Monitor for hazardous environments, the S50 Smoke and Early Fire Monitor with intelligent sensing to differentiate between fires and other emissions, and the D52 Dust Particulate Monitor which uses laser technology to manage unhealthy dust levels.

The newly launched DPM50 Diesel Particulate Monitor addresses dangerous diesel emissions, while the P511 Air Velocity Monitor ensures optimal ventilation with real-time measurements. M3SH’s noise monitoring devices offer continuous noise level assessments, crucial for maintaining safe environments in mining operations.
The project further includes motor protection detection units to safeguard motors on critical equipment. M3SH motor protection technology goes beyond traditional safeguards, employing state-of-the-art monitoring and diagnostic capabilities. This real-time insight enables predictive maintenance, reducing downtime and optimising resource allocation. Finally, the project involves PDS and missing miner testing to ensure the utmost safety and operational efficiency in the mining environment.
Time to take action
As the mining industry continues to evolve, the integration of these real-time information systems becomes increasingly essential. Mining operations that embrace these technologies stand to improve productivity, enhance safety, and gain a competitive edge in the market.
To stay ahead, it’s time for mining operations to invest in real-time monitoring solutions. By doing so, they can not only protect their workforce and the environment, but also ensure sustained growth and success in a demanding industry.
